Speech and Language Therapy

Gipsy Hill Federation has a fantastic variety of support for children who may have additional Speech and Language needs.  This may be in a way that supports the whole class, in a group setting or individual work.

All schools work with NHS speech and language therapists. They mainly work with children who have an Education Health and Care Plan or for whom we are looking to apply for an Education Health and Care Plan.'  We work with two to independent therapists to three. These therapists work directly with children and their 1:1s, setting individual programmes and targets, and delivering support and training for staff in the school.

Gipsy Hill Federation is in an extremely fortunate position to work with two independent speech and language therapists as well. This means that, in addition to the support from the NHS, we are able to offer support to more children with a wider range of needs. These therapists work closely with a team of SEN practitioners, who may deliver 1:1 therapy sessions working on specific targets with the children but also work to support adults in class to use strategies that support the development of Speech and Language.




Chatterbugs © is a 12 week structured programme designed by one of our independent therapists and delivered by trained TAs to develop children's foundation communication skills in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Groups of 4 children attend daily 10 minute sessions, where they take part in fun, play-based activities which help them to focus, follow instructions and participate appropriately.

Chatterbugs © overall aim: to develop the children’s skills in attention and listening, turn-taking, receptive and expressive language.


Chatterbees is a universal Speech and Language support package developed by our therapists and SEN Practitioner team that is available for use with all children in the classroom. It focuses specifically on vocabulary development for science. Children engage with a range of different vocabulary activities to support them through fun and meaningful repetition to develop key and higher level scientific vocabulary. This supports children to then participate and engage more actively in science lessons and express more complex scientific ideas. Some activities might be used with the whole class; others in small groups or in a one-to-one situation. The resource might be used in science lessons; as a pre-teaching tool in early work, for example; or as a consolidation tool at key points in the day. This resource is used flexibly to meet the language development needs of a range of pupils.

Each pack contains:

  • Buzzwords
  • Picture based dictionaries for reference
  • Separate word and definition cards for matching and sorting game
  • Word group cards
  • Learning and saying word prompt cards
  • Puzzles: Crosswords, Hangman and Word Searches

Individual Sessions

When a child’s communication skills are assessed by the independent speech and language therapist, targets are set to enable the SENP to conduct direct work with the child. Activities take place in 1:1 sessions or in class as appropriate. A variety of games and activities are used, and these sessions are usually great fun!

Communication Friendly School

Gipsy Hill Federation has a policy of being ‘Communication friendly’, and using strategies to support speech and language with the whole class.

Weekly signs of the week are introduced in assembly.  As a whole school approach, we use a simple system of signing to support wherever possible.

We use a variety of methods to give children visual support where appropriate. Children use personalised systems, for example a visual timetable to support their understanding of the day’s structure.   We have visual reminders of ‘Good Learning Rules’ to help the children to focus and use visual support routinely throughout teaching sessions.

We also train staff to use great language strategies, such as learning vocabulary in context, lots of repetition, offering choices and ‘gap fill’ activities, to support children’s understanding, talking and learning.
