Elm Wood Primary School is a 2 form entry school based in West Norwood, South London.  In 2008 we hard federated with Kingswood Primary School to form Gipsy Hill Federation, and our school is rated as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted.  Please explore our stories below and view our section links for more information about us.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Elm Wood Primary school and our school website. Elm Wood is a happy place where children thrive, and are inquisitive and confident learners. We have very high expectations of our students, and of our staff. We treat every child as an individual and value the unique personality they bring to our school.

I am delighted to share with you our whole school vision and to provide an additional platform to communicate the successes and opportunities available to your children.

Elm Wood Primary School has been part of Gipsy Hill Federation since 2008, contributing to and benefitting from the wealth of support available.  We believe that an inclusive and engaging curriculum, high expectations and dedicated staff are key to providing children with a safe learning environment, where they are confident to undertake challenges and become independent learners.

  • Welcome to Redwing Class - Elm Wood Primary

    December 2017: In Redwing class we have been learning all about Arctic and Antarctica. We made igloos using marshmallows, cotton wool and plastic cups. We also made wonderful paintings using chalk to create Northern lights! Have a look at our amazing artistic work!  Redwing class have made a productive start to the year and have taken no time in settling down into life in Year 2. In Maths, we have learnt about the value of number, including 10 more and 10 less as well as greater than and less than. In our first topic, ‘Journeys’ we have been learning all about noun phrases and time phrases. We will be learning all about London in the following week.. We also painted self-portraits. Come and see our work on display in the classroom! We can’t wait to share our learning with you at our first workshare assembly on Wednesday 8th November at 10.30am.​

  • Welcome to Skylark Class - Elm Wood Primary

    14 December 2017: As part of our happy ever after topic Skylark class have been learning all about light and shadow. After researching the formation of  shadows the children carried out a science investigation about the effect of distance on the height of shadows. Following that the children designed and created their very own shadow puppets and performed their adapted versions of Hansel and Gretel for the rest of the class.  20 October 2017: The children in Skylark class have been learning about 'Frozen Explorers' this term. They used all of their knowledge to create survival guides for explorers, which included survival equipment lists, key facts about Antarctica and information on how to survive in extreme weather conditions. We the focused learning about the Northern lights. The children used pastels and chalks to create pieces of artwork that are displayed in our classroom.  September 2017: Skylark class have made an excellent start to the year. In Maths, we have been focusing on addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers. Our learning across the curriculum topic is 'Frozen Explorers', one which the children are really enjoying. In PE we have started running our very own half marathons, each week we run half a mile and record our times. We then use our maths skills to work out our time differences. We can't wait to show you all of our exciting work!

  • Welcome to Swift Class - Elm Wood Primary

    14 December 2017: In Swift class we have been learning about difference.We used number lines to count backwards to find the difference between two numbers. 20 October 2017: In PSHE Swift class have been learning different relaxation techniques to keep our bodies calm. We imagined we were jelly fish and  trees and made different movements accordingly. We also have been practising Milkshake breathing using cups straws and water to blow bubbles. 15 October 2017: Swift class have settled well in to year 1, making an excellent start to the year. In our topic, ‘Me, Myself and I,’ we have been sketching self-portraits, describing ourselves and talking about the differences and similarities in our families. In Maths, we are learning to compare numbers, identifying bigger and smaller amounts and putting them into order. Come and have a look at our amazing work displayed in the classroom. We are excited for our first work share assembly where we can share more of our learning with you!​
